Gran Canaria Airport
Gran Canaria Airport is the only commercial airport on the island after which it is named, and, as such, facilitates all of the commercial freight and passenger transport to and from the island. The airport is situated just 12 miles south of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and is occasionally referred to as Las Palmas airport.

The airport transported over 10.5 million passengers and 23.7 million tonnes of freight in 2011 alone, making it Spain's fifth busiest airport in terms of passengers and freight. Gran Canaria Airport is of strategic importance for several major airlines, and acts as a hub for a multitude of connecting flights further afield. The location of this airport also made it one of the official emergency landing sites for the NASA Space Shuttle, right up until 2011 when NASA decommissioned the shuttle.

The single terminal at Gran Canaria Airport was first opened in March 1973, with a further extension added in October 1991. For convenience, the airport operators have partitioned the terminal into three zones, Zones A, B and C, each with a different function. Zone A houses flights for the EU, Zone B handles flights outside the EU, and Zone C encompasses flights serving only other Canary Islands. Although at present only one terminal is operational at the airport, a second is currently under construction.

Currently, Gran Canaria Airport operates 96 check-in desks, although ongoing renovations will soon expand the number of operational desks to 132, as well as increasing the number of baggage reclaim belts from 16 to 24, and opening a number of new gates to increase the total number of operational gates to 40. Although the airport boasts a large number of gates and desks, each boarding pass indicates the appropriate zone and gate, and the airport is well signposted. As well as this, each of the three zones is colour coded: pink for Zone A, green for Zone B, and orange for Zone C. Zone A contains 27 gates, Zone B contains 6, and Zone C contains 8, while Zones B and C share 3 of these gates.

Car hire companies can be found before exiting the terminal building on arrival, and duty free shopping can be found in the passenger-only zone after passport control. A wide range of shops, restaurants and cafés are available to help you pass the time until departure or between connecting flights. Conference rooms, a prayer room, first aid facilities, a bureau de change, and information desks are all conveniently placed and available throughout the airport.
